My intention for this blog is to change the image of Africa that most non-Africans and indeed many Africans have. I want to remind everyone that Africa is a truly BEAUTIFUL, RICH and immensely DIVERSE continent full of hardworking and hospitable people. The African people have overcome the immense odds stacked against them as a result of the "arrested development" caused by slavery and colonialism. Now, finally, after an average of thirty years of self-determination, the African continent is moving forward into the 21st century. This blog will highlight the achievement of Africa as a whole. I feel no need to dwell on the negative aspects of Africa because that is pushed in our faces and ingrained in our minds already. The negativity is so deep seated that one rarely thinks of positive images when thinking about Africa. The poverty we see so often in Africa makes us forget that Africa is the world's richest continent. The over generalization of the African people makes us forget that there are over 2,000 languages and about 2,500 ethnic groups who live in varying physical environments within the continent.
I would also like to show my pride in my country, Nigeria, the largest black nation in the world who itself has over 250 ethnic groups. And lastly, explain what it truly means to be "African".
