Archives Photo Contest

May 01, 2012 by Sarah Goldstein

An update:

Congrats to Katie Bussiere! We drew her name from among the eight correct answers. The picture shows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Eliot House. On October 20, 1963, Dr. King came to MHC and presented a sermon at the Amphitheater entitled The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life. Afterwards, he spoke to press and members of the community from Eliot House. If you'd like to hear a recording of the sermon, it's available at Archives & Special Collections

We'd like to thank everyone who participated in our photo contest, and extend special thanks to Digital Assets & Preservation Services student assistant Emily Carduff and Archives & Special Collections Digital Collections Intern Curtis Small for their help in researching the wonderful images.

Remember, you can browse the entire Archives Digital Collection anytime, and we welcome you to visit the Archives in person for even more resources.

Last week's picture portrayed a fire drill. We're not sure why everyone had to bring their towels with them, but the sleepy sentiment is quite timeless.  All of our seventeen responses were correct, and we hope our lucky winner will enjoy some Rao's treats!

You were required to bring a towel on fire drills/evacuations to cover your mouth, hopefully avoiding smoke inhalation. The preference was for a wet towel which was supposed to be a better filter. In my memory, no one was willing to have a wet towel around their neck standing outside in winter so the towels were dry and probably not so useful.
